Oscar Fashion

im 23yr’s old Can i be a fashion designer?
Im 23 yrs old and i really want to be a fashion designer like Oscar de la renta, etc. So, i think i can get a good education about fashion designer in Parsons but i dont have enough money to get me the education i need. the only thing im good at is sketching.
i have no sewing skills at all. Theres another problem i have no high school diploma and i think ill be denied at parsons.
So please advice me what can i do
Yes, you can be a fashion designer, no matter what your age is when you start. Fashion design is one of those rare skills where someone self-educated can be as successful as someone who has gone to college. Madeline Vionette is one of history’s greatest designers, and she never set foot in a fashion school and didn’t know anything about pattern drafting; she did all her design by draping. Sketching is only a tiny part of fashion design, fabric doesn’t always behave the same on the body as it does in a picture.
Sketching is good, but you will need to know how to make your sketches into actual wearable garments. Sewing is not difficult to learn although it takes time to master. Tim Gunn, formerly of Parson’s recommended prospective students get the Reader’s Digest book of sewing so they could learn the basics of sewing. I recommend that book and in addition, the Vogue Sewing book, especially one of the older editions from the seventies. Sewing is a matter of practice and patience, more than anything else. Before long you’ll find yourself not only making things, but making things unique and different, it’s that imagination and creativity that you need to develop as much as sewing and sketching. If you find patterns intimidating, try draping fabric on a dress form and learn about design that way.
Try to get a job in the fashion business and save your pennies, nickles and quarters for a school fund. A job in fashion is an asset. Look into bursaries, grants, etc for money. I have no idea if there are any available but there could be…develop a portfolio of sketches, inspirations, fabric snippets, yarns beads threads and embellishments and three complete dresses/outfits. Put together a small “look book” of your best designs and photos of your three outfits and submit this with your application. That might be what pushes your application ahead of the pack. They will give consideration to someone with actual garments over a student with nothing more than pretty pictures.
There are many books out there, a quick search of amazon using fashion design and pattern design will reveal many books on sketching, draping, design as a business, pattern drafting, sewing, etc. Public libraries should have plenty of design books, some from FIT’s publishing group, Fairchild Press. These books are used by the Fashion Institute in their programs. There’s also Winifred Aldrich’s “Metric pattern cutting,” easier to understand and apply than FIT’s very advanced and (needlessly) complex books.
That’s just a little overview, I hope that it points you in the right direction so you know where to look for more information. Good luck.
